Chapter 2

Lena sat at her dresser painting her lips with a clear strawberry flavoured gloss which she had bought earlier that morning and waited all day to try. Her consecration on her new shiny lips was interrupted but the sound of closing car doors and unfamiliar voices. Curiously the red head wondered over to her bedroom window, which was draped in thin white cloth allowing her to see almost clearly out while a view in was impossible. She watched as a small blonde girl, a small stocky man and a casual but elegant looking woman lug heavy suite cases up the driveway of the house across the road.

‘New neighbours?’ Lena thought to her self as she watched the strange family from her second story perch.

Salty sea air ruffled Yulia’s hair. She took a deep breath in soaking up its freshness as her aunt released the grip she had on the tiny girl after almost hugging the life out of her.

“It’s been so long Yulia. Look how much you have grown! How old are you now sixteen, seventeen?” Ana was overly exited to see her family after such a long time.

Her happiness made Yulia giggle as she answered “Seventeen.”

“Oh kids are growing up too fast these days. Your cousin Danny is nearly twenty you know.”

She would have liked to give Danny a younger brother or sister but the opportunity was lost when Yulia’s uncle Tony passed away after a car accident.

“Really? Where is he I haven’t seen him in a while?” Yulia asked playfully.

“A while? More like 7 years!” Ana laughed. “He is at work but will be joining us for dinner. You two will be sharing his room for a while; I’m in the midst of cleaning out a room for you. Is that ok?”

“That’s fine aunt Ana I’m sure he’ll get over it.” Yulia laughed.

“Ah!” Ana directed a hand wave at Yulia. “Don’t call me aunt you’re too old for that and it makes me sound old.” She giggled

“You’re not old” Mr Volkova chimed in.

“AH! My big brother, Come here and give me a hug.”

Ana went on to hug Mr and Mrs Volkova and ushered them both inside insisting they have a cup of coffee because they have had such a long trip.

Yulia followed closely behind turning around as she entered to take another look at her new surroundings. She noticed the sandy beach she smelt earlier was closer than she thought. It was practically at the end of her new street. Yulia was beginning to like this new life. She looked at every detail of the old houses that stood neatly together on the other side of the road. Out of the corner of her eye Yulia noticed a silhouette at the window with white hangings. She turned to look directly at the window hoping to get a better look of a person she thought she saw but failed. Thinking nothing of it she went into her new home. ‘There will be plenty of time to look around later.’

Lena’s heart jumped. ‘She looked straight at me!’ ‘Did she see me? What if she thinks I’m some crazy perve?’ Her terror eased as she watched the blonde girl shrug off her confusion and disappear through the open door.

The red head place the lip gloss that she had in her hand and had been fiddling with as she watch the strangers back on the dresser. She left her room and ran as fast as she possibly could with out falling down the stairs and breaking a random bone. She grinded to a halt as she entered the kitchen where her mother had been preparing dinner.

“Ah, you’ve come to help.” Mrs Katina assumed.

“Of course not!” Lena joked, “What are we cooking?”

“A little bit of this and a little bit of that” Her mother answered.

Lena loved nights when dinner wasn’t one set meal but rather a mixture of many. It made things interesting.

“Mom, who are those people across the road?” Lena couldn’t wait to ask.

“Ana and Danny?” Mrs Katina new who she was asking about but avoided the conversation.

“Don’t play dumb, you know who I’m talking about. I think they’re staying with Ana.” Lena persisted knowing she knew because all Ana and her mother did while she was at school was gossip.

“You never could mind your own business could you love?” Lena’s mother mocked.

“That’s Ana’s older brother, his wife and their daughter.” She continued.

“They are staying with Ana until they find a place of their own. They just moved here from Russia you know.” Mrs Katina finished her sentence as if she was gossiping again.

“Are they from Moscow too?” Lena asked knowing that her family moved from there when she was seven.

“I don’t know sweetheart, why don’t you go over and ask?” Mrs Katina said jokingly

“Mom that’s none of my business.” Lena snapped.

“Exactly!” Lena’s mother smiled proudly at her own smart remark and the fact that she put Lena back in place with one word.

                                                          +++++

Danny and Yulia walked slowly out to the trashcans lined up by the side of the road. Carrying a full bag of rubbish each they struggled to open the lids.

Yulia spoke Russian to her cousin knowing he could understand “You’re mom is such good cook. I can’t lift this rubbish, I’m way to full!” She said still struggling.

“Here let me help.” Danny helped the small girl with her bag.

“So you’re staying in my room huh?” He asked as he helped.

“Yeah ‘till aunt Ana fixes that room upstairs. I’ll give her a hand tomorrow so I’m out of your hair as soon as possible” she replied.

“Nah it’s ok, you can stay as long as you like. I could use the company.” Yulia figured he didn’t have many friends. He was never the type to make new friendships unless he had to.

The pair turned to walk back to the house when a loud crash stoped them. As Yulia looked around for the sauce of the noise she spotted a red haired girl wrestling with bloated rubbish bad and a half full can.

“Need a hand?” Danny shouted over the noise.

Lena looked up. She caught a glimpse of the small girl standing with her friend. The blonde stood shivering in the cold summer night. Lena drifted off; she was caught in two endless blue oceans that seemed to be reflecting the starlight. She stood hypnotized. Yulia locked her eyes with Lena’s. The strangers grey eyes seemed familiar to her, soothing and full of energy, but different to the eyes she was remembering. Lena’s eyes showed a soft spot. A place where only one person could go and remain there forever. She suddenly found her self wanting to be there. Lena wanted more of this strange girl; she wanted a name or a ‘Hello’, something that would distract the red head from the blue gems that were swallowing her whole.
A single tear trickled down Yulia’s soft cheek as she saw everything she wanted from Ebony but never would have right there in the red head’s eyes.

“Lena? You need a hand?” Danny repeated breaking the silence as he begun to cross the road heading toward the mesmerised girl.

“Y-yes thanks” She struggled to get her get her words out and concentrate on Danny instead of someone she didn’t know but seemed to understand.

A soft rain begun to fall and Danny turned back to Yulia as he headed over to help his friend.

“Go back inside Yulia, it’s cold. I’ll be there in a minute!” He spoke in Russian to the blonde girl but she remained in the same position as if she did not understand.

Lena broke the intense stare and focused on Danny’s helpful hands that had lifted the garbage out of hers and into the bin. Yulia dried her eyes and wondered slowly back to the house where she waited for her cousin.

“Who is that?” Lena asked Danny as she rested the lid of the can agist it, as it was too full to put on top.

“That’s my cousin Yulia. She and her parents are staying with us for a while.” He explained.

Lena nodded with fake interest as she had already got the boring information from her mother.

“Yulia did you say her name is?” She asked hardly believing she had gotten what she asked for.

“Yes.” Danny replied.

“Well tell her I said ‘Hi’. I’d better get back inside it’s a little chilly.” She said as she begun to walk away.

“Thank you for helping. Good night!”

“See you later” Danny shouted as he was already back in front of his house.

“Girlfriend?” Yulia ask as the freezing young man re-entered the house.

“I should be so lucky.” Danny chuckled back. “Lena and I are just good friends, we met through our mothers.”

Lena and Yulia closed their front doors in unison. Both pausing for a second as they remembered each other’s names.
