Chapter 12
Forgiven

Day two of Yulia’s suspension. Her plan to talk to Lena was still in play but still seemed impossible. She slumped in front of her new friend and pushed random keys. She hummed the same note hit after its sound disappeared. She took notice of her hand and how different it looked to Mr Coplans’. “I wonder if he is an English man…” Bored thoughts ran though Yulia’s mind.

                                                             +++++

“Hey Lena is Yulia sick again?” Jessica asked.

“I dunno, maybe.” She replied with no real interest.

“Where is she?” Jessica persisted.

“How the fuck should I know?” Lena snapped catching the attention of the boys eating on the opposite table.

“What the hell are you looking at? Mind your business before I poke your fucking eyes out.”

“Lena relax gees, what the hell is wrong with you today little miss edgy?” Lena was in no mood to discus her feelings with her nosy friend. She just wanted to forget Yulia and have thing return to how they were before she arrived.

“Did you and Yulia have a fight Len?”

“Don’t call me that, and its none of you business if we did or didn’t.”

“Ohhh so you did, was is over a boy?” Lena couldn’t shake the interrogation.

“Look Jess, we were friends and now we’re not ok. We are different that’s all. Now drop it.”
“Fine, whatever.” Jess rolled her eyes. “Well speak of the devil.” Jessica’s attention turned to Yulia. The brunette was hurrying through the lunchroom toward the girls dodging people with lunch trays as she went.

“Lena, thank god I find you. I need to speak to you.” Yulia pleaded.

“I’m in the middle of something with Jess.” Lena lied.

“Actually, I was just leaving. I have to go to the library.” Jessica stood and smiled at Lena getting a foul look in return. “Bye you two.” She made a quick exit allowing Yulia to fill her seat.

“Please Lena, I’m sorry about all the things. You do not have to worry about that girl.” Yulia kept her voice low.

“Do you have any idea how it felt to see you and her like that.” Lena interrupted continuing the low tone. “I don’t know what to think, I don’t know how you feel and it hurts me to not know where your heart is.”

“I am telling you these thing Lena, my heart is for you. Ebony is my past in Russia not here, she hurt me there so I am not with her. I have you now and I know that you love me because I can feel it and I would not do bad things to loose that.”

“So why did you protect her?” Lena fought back tears.

“I couldn’t let her get hurt, I couldn’t let you get hurt. It all got turned shit before I could stop it. But in more truth I still feel something for her, but I cannot ever forgive her because I know she just wants to use me. I know in my heart that you wont do the same thing and I wont do any thing to loose that…why did you help Thomas?” Yulia did her best to explain but couldn’t avoid asking about him.

“Same reason. But I left him for no reason.”

“You left him for me.”

“And I still can’t work out why.”

“Because I love you Lena.” Yulia now held back her tears.

“So does Thomas, I don’t know what you feel.”

“I am here telling you. I would not be if I was…if it was not true.” The two girls sat in silence. Lena’s thoughts wrestled with her heart.

“Yulia I don’t know what to do, just…just leave me alone.”

“Yulia, shouldn’t you be in the music room?” Miss Rosa interrupted.

“She was just out for lunch Miss, but she’s finished now.” Lena stood as she explained. She passed a blank look to Yulia and left without a goodbye.
“Well come on then back to it.” The bossy teacher ordered.

                                                        +++++

“Ahh Jeffrey, poked your head in to check on the new girl for me hey?” Mr Vincent joined Jeff at the doorway. He didn’t answer but instead stood mesmerized by Yulia. She sat with her face resting on the keys playing a few bars of Mozart over and over.

“She’s a troubled young one don’t you think?” Mr Vincent whispered.

“Brilliant is more how I would describe her Mr Vincent.”

“Well how ever you look at it she’s sure going to be a hand full. A much needed breath of fresh air around here if you ask me.”

“Much needed indeed.” Jeffery added.

“Well I’m off old man…”Mr Vincent placed is hand on Jeff shoulder “…keep an eye on her for me will ya?” He left as quickly as he came.

“I will young chap. I will.” A pleasant smile crept onto Jeffery’s face.

Tears streamed slowly down Yulia’s soft skin. Her ears rang with the notes she pushed but the noise was not enough to dull the sound of Lena’s voice still echoing in her mind. Her close up view of the keys reminded her of the snow in Russia and how the light always made it whiter. She watched her fingers jump on the keys like children jumping in puddles.

“Can you not cry on the piano, I’m sure how the old ivory will react with the salt?” Jeff entered the room. Yulia eyes shifted to him but the rest of her remained unchanged. In the short time they had known each other an unexplainable bond that was much like that between two old men had formed between the two. It was an understanding that was not to be questioned for fear of it disappearing. Neither of them assumed dominance but both remained in control. Jeffery joined Yulia at the piano. She remained still only moving her fingers.

Jeffery let out a puff of air. “Still in love?”

“I do not think I will fall out of it.” Yulia looked back at the keys.

“May I ask who the lucky person is?”

“No.”

“Fair enough. So what is the problem, they don’t love you back?”

“I can not tell what she is thinking, I have no clue for myself.” Not thinking Yulia spilt her secret. Jeff rested his elbow on the lower piano keys making a horrible sound that quickly ended.

“Yulia my dear, do you realize what you have just told me?” Yulia’s key pushing hand halted with Jeff’s words and her eyes darted back to him. Jeff drew in a deep breath “Who you choose to love and how you choose to live your life is none of my concern. At this age, a glass of fine wine and good company is all that I worry about.”

“Am I good for company?” Yulia whispered.

“The best I have found since my late wife, god bless her soul.” A happy smile appeared on his face as he quietly dipped into memories of his true love. “I can see a lot of her in you Yulia.”

“Did she play music like you?”

“Oh she loved music but the poor thing couldn’t play a note. But her voice, her voice I hear in yours and it brings me visions of angels.”

Yulia lifted her head. “I am glad I make you happy. Now how do I make me happy?”

“If I knew that my dear the world would be a very different place. All I know is that some how happiness just finds you, and its what you do when you have it that matters.” He smiled cheekily at Yulia and left her to her thoughts.

                                                              +++++

Lena wondered through the deserted school hallway. She was looking for Jessica as they had made plans to walk home together. After school was always Lena’s favourite time, noisy students no longer smothered all the sounds of the distant world. She could hear birds and car horns and kids laughing. She remembered how Yulia made her feel that happy. “Maybe she was telling truth. It still doesn’t change the fact that Ebony is still in her life. But Thomas is still in mine and she doesn’t care. Why do I care? I love her that’s why, I love her. Gees Lena would just stop bullshiting to your self.” She walked past the staff room and strained to listed to any gossip from the teachers. She pasted the main office and approached the music room when the sound of a piano became apparent.

Yulia pressed the keys hard and closed her eyes. “I’m not crying any more, I am going to play until I can’t feel my fingers and more. Ahh the best stress relief in the world.”

I’ve hardly been outside my room in days
Cause I don’t feel that I deserve the sunshine’s rays.
But darkness helped until the whisky wore away
And it was then I realised that conscious never fades.
When you’re young you have this image of your life
That you’d be scrupulous and one day even make a wife.
And you make boundaries you’d never dream to cross
And if you happen to you wake completely lost.
But I will fight for you, be sure that I will fight
Until we’re the special two once again

Her voice was caught by the music again and was carried down the hall hitting Lena like a sudden gust of wind. Confused, the red head slowly crept closer to the beautiful sounds.

And we will only need each other
We’ll bleed together, our hands will not be taught to hold another’s
When we’re the special two.
And we could only see each other, we’ll bleed together
These arms will not be taught need another
When we’re the special two

Lena had never heard he school piano played like that before. She wanted to see who was the master of the notes. She crept closer to the music room door and listened with out touching it. The feminine voice continued singing powerful words. It was as if each was a tiny weight placed on Lena’s heart as they were sung.

I remember someone old once said to me that
Lies will lock you up with truth the only key
But I was comfortable and warm inside my shell
And couldn’t see this place would soon become a hell
So is it better to tell and hurt or lie to save your face
Well I guess the answer is don’t do it in the first place
I know I’m not deserving of your trust form you right now
But if by chance you change your mind you know I will not let you down
Cause we were the special two and we’ll be again

The red head turned the door handle carefully and pushed the door open praying that it wouldn’t creek and disturb the piano player before she could see them in action. “Yulia? No it can’t be, she was suspended…in the music room!” Lena could hardly believe her eyes. Yulia’s passion made Lena’s heart sink and a lump swell in the throat. Tears streamed out of Lena’s eyes as she whispered the playing girls name out loud.

Yulia felt a draught cool her face. She didn’t care who entered the room or what they would say. She continued to play unaware of the red head slowly approaching and drew in a deep breath. A familiar scent captured her thoughts; she sat up straight hoping to smell it again. Lena froze thinking she would be caught but kept on when she saw that Yulia was not yet finished.

And we will only need each other
We’ll breathe together, our hands will not be taught to hold another’s
When we’re the special two.
And we can only see each other, we’ll bleed together
These arms will not be taught need another
When we’re the special two

Lena stood next to the brunette. Unfazed by her presence she played on as the taller girl took a seat close to her with her back to the keys and studied her face. Yulia looked away form the keys and deep into her eyes stealing her breath.

Step outside my mind eyes for a minute
And I’ll look over me like a doctor looking for disease
For something that could ease the pain
But nothing cures the hurt that you
You bring upon yourself just remembering, just remembering how we were

When we would only need each other
We’d breathe together, our hands would not be taught to hold another’s
We were we’re the special two.
And we could only see each other, we’d bleed together
These arms will not be taught need another
Cause we’re the special two

The sound of the piano disappeared leaving the girls in silence staring at each other. Lena opened to mouth to speak but found her words had disappeared; she rested her hand tenderly on Yulia’s thigh and hung her head.

“I’m sorry…I’m sorry.” She whispered as she broke into tears

Yulia rested her head against Lena’s and delicately placed her hand on the back of her neck.
